Councils admit using parking cash to keep tax down

Motorists are being used as cash cows to keep council tax down, local authorities have admitted.

David Sparks, the chairman of the Local Government Association’s Transport Board, has said councils are pushing up parking charges to ease the pressure on their budgets.

Mr Sparks’ admission was buried in evidence given to the Public Accounts Committee, which said councils in England made £411 million profit from on and off-street parking.

This figure does not take into account the hundreds of millions of pounds they also rake in from parking fines.
