Businesses not checking driver eyesight, despite concerns
A shockingly small amount of businesses are testing the eyesight of their approved fleet drivers.
Research from opticians Specsavers has shown that only a third of companies surveyed provided eyesight tests as part of their company policy, despite the fact that nearly half, 44%, are concerned over the adequacy of their drivers’ sight for driving.
Suzanne Randall, corporate account manager for Specsavers Corporate Eyecare, said: ‘It is revealing that so many employers hold concerns over their drivers’ eyesight and, therefore, over their safety.”
Even more worrying, 53% of the same sample admitted to never testing the eyesight of their driving force, despite their concerns.
Ms. Randall adds; “It may be that this is because they do not feel it is their place to intervene in what they may view as a personal matter – but this is simply not the case.
“Health and safety law applies to all work activities and clearly states that this includes driving for work purposes.”
